The internet and my website were scary...once...
My story is that in the beginning, I was scared silly of surfing the internet and even of managing my own website. The day the webmaster handed over the reins of my website back to me is still a memorable one. I had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach, and it churned constantly for many days. For a time emails flowed freely between the webmaster and me – I’m surprised he answered most (notice the word 'most') because now in hindsight, my questions were so basic! Congrats on a great e-book. I can clearly see how much time and dedication you put into this and the result is excellent! Rob Ford, FWA Principal at http://www.thefwa.com |
Eventually I found my feet by doing some of my own internet familiarization – well kind of… it took many late nights of on-line researching to get my head around learning what it was all about. The internet experience continues. It's not often when a day that goes by without me learning something new on-line. These days I learn new things with greater confidence, and what a great feeling that is! In order to maintain my website, I had to learn many things and quickly because of my work schedule. It was like jumping in the deep end and having to learn to swim and fast! On reflection I never really thought through how I was going to manage my site, all I remember thinking was that having a website was a great idea! Far from thinking things through, all I had in my head were thoughts that this venture would be a piece of cake and would require minimal to nil input from me. In the beginning it's not... I ploughed through mountains of information, some pretty useless and irrelevant, just to give me a basic understanding of the on-line world. Countless hours were spent learning and I also made many mistakes along the way.
Everything on-line is not in the public domain
When I first started surfing the ‘net I thought everything on-line was in the so called public domain – material that is uncopyrighted. I soon discovered that this should never be assumed because I started researching what copyright, plagiarism and intellectual property actually meant in regards to websites. So interested was I in all this that I made sure to include a section on where to find information on copyright, intellectual property and plagiarism in Quick Click! Internet Tips!
Introduction to the internet for the uninitiated This e-book is an introduction to the internet, specifically targeting those new to the internet. Starting out with the internet can be a pretty scary learning experience. There’s almost an infinite amount of information on-line which needs to be sifted through to determine its currency, accuracy and relevance to those surfing the internet. I have researched virtually every 'Guide' to the Internet and read every article written by 'Technicians and Gurus' in an effort to fully comprehend what the 'World Wide Web' is, but more importantly, how it can help my business. Whilst I consider myself to be 'Computer Literate' I found myself having to comprehend acronyms, abbreviations and abstract theories that seemed to defy logic. What a welcome change then, is Michaela's "Quick Click Internet Tips"! A book written in a relaxed and easy to read style that gives me the information I need. The author explains complex information in a simple format and explains abstract theories to the layperson (me). A breath of fresh air, unpretentious and packed full of useful information, Michaela's book is a must for those wanting to navigate the web with confidence, set up and operate a website, conduct business on the web and most importantly, impress those 'Computer Nerds' at parties… Roger N.
